It’s the TED conference this past week and an MIT student successfully created a gadget that turns the internet into a 6th sense for humans. By using an ordinary internet-connected mobile, a web cam with a mirror and a projector, a group of students at MIT’s Media Lab created a phenomenal gadget that I believe will change history. The internet can literally be displayed on any surface while this computer can “see” the world as we know it and then display information in an organic fashion.

The video shows the MIT student at the grocery store picking up any product. The gadget then scans the product and allows the student to see internet-related information on the product. Then, at the library, the student picks a book and the gadget displays how many people have rated the book, what the rating is of the book and then also a snyposis of the book based on what the gadget is seeing in real time.

Finally, at a party, the student sees another friend and the gadget displays ON THE PERSON whatever “tags” of information this person has on the internet – i.e. Facebook info, blog address, etc.

Finally, the student goes into a taxi, pulls a boarding pass for his flight and the gadget can then display the gate his flight departs, if the flight is on time or late, etc. It’s absolutey amazing. YOU HAVE TO SEE THE VIDEO!

Also, we’ve discussed how the iPhone is competing with the Amazon Kindle and it looks like Google has decided to help the iPhone by adding over a million iPhone-optimized books, free of charge. You can view the books by taking your iPhone’s browser to books.google.com.

I like your podcast. In this show it looks like you must have got a green screen. Background looks very nice. Your show looks very professional.

Do you know if the newspaper part involved the device recognizing the headline? Seems so, but other students in my HCI class think not.
